Soft and rigid PVC co-extrusion is a manufacturing process that combines two different PVC materials into one continuous profile. In many custom plastic profile projects, the rigid part provides structure, while the soft part provides sealing, cushioning, or flexible contact performance.
This process is widely used for window and door sealing profiles, glazing bead seals, edge trims, protective strips, appliance seals, and other custom plastic profiles that need both strength and flexibility.

What Is Soft and Rigid PVC Co-Extrusion?
In a normal PVC extrusion process, one material is melted, pushed through a die, cooled, and formed into a continuous profile.
In soft and rigid PVC co-extrusion, two materials are extruded together through a specially designed die. One material is usually rigid PVC, and the other is soft PVC or a flexible sealing material. The two materials are combined during the extrusion process and become one finished profile.
The rigid PVC section gives the product shape stability and installation strength. The soft PVC section helps the profile seal gaps, reduce vibration, improve contact, or adapt to uneven surfaces.

Why Use Co-Extrusion Instead of Separate Assembly?
For some sealing products, the soft part can be inserted into the rigid profile after extrusion. However, co-extrusion can be a better solution when the design requires stable bonding, consistent positioning, and efficient production.
Soft and rigid PVC co-extrusion can help reduce assembly steps and improve profile consistency. It also helps keep the soft sealing part in the correct position during use.
For products such as window and door sealing profiles, this is especially important because the sealing part needs to remain stable during installation and long-term use.
Common Applications of Soft and Rigid PVC Co-Extruded Profiles
Soft and rigid PVC co-extruded profiles are commonly used in applications where one profile needs both support and sealing performance.
Common applications include:
Window and door sealing profiles
Glazing bead seals
PVC edge trim profiles
Protective cover profiles
Appliance sealing strips
Automotive sealing and trim profiles
Industrial equipment sealing profiles
Custom plastic profiles with flexible lips or V-seals
In these applications, the rigid part is usually used for fixing, supporting, or positioning, while the soft part is used for sealing or flexible contact.

Material Selection for Co-Extruded PVC Profiles
Material selection is important for soft and rigid PVC co-extrusion.
The rigid PVC material should have enough strength, dimensional stability, and surface quality. Depending on the application, it can be standard rigid PVC, aerated PVC, or other modified PVC compounds.
The soft PVC material should have suitable flexibility, hardness, color, and sealing performance. For some projects, the soft sealing strip may be supplied separately by another factory and then combined with the rigid PVC body during production.
Before production, the compatibility between the rigid material and the soft material should be checked carefully. The profile structure, bonding position, extrusion temperature, color matching, and shrinkage behavior can all affect the final result.
Important Points Before Production
Before making a custom soft and rigid PVC co-extruded profile, several details should be confirmed.
First, the drawing or sample should clearly show the profile shape, dimensions, and the position of the soft sealing part. If the product has a V-seal, lip seal, or flexible edge, the direction should be confirmed before tooling and production.
Second, the material hardness and color should be confirmed. In many projects, the customer needs the rigid profile and the soft sealing part to match in color, such as white with white, brown with brown, or black with black.
Third, the packaging method should be considered early. Long PVC profiles can be packed in small bundles with shrink film, then packed into cartons or pallets. Custom pack stickers and box stickers can also be added to make receiving, storage, and installation easier for the customer.

Case Example: PVC Co-Extruded Bead Seal for New Zealand
In one of our recent projects, we produced custom soft and rigid PVC co-extruded bead seal profiles for a glazing customer in New Zealand.
The product used an aerated rigid PVC body combined with a soft V-seal. The project included two color options: white profile with white soft V-seal, and brown profile with brown soft V-seal.
The soft V-seal was supplied by another factory and delivered to our extrusion factory. We then combined it with the rigid PVC body through the co-extrusion process.
For packing, several pieces were wrapped together with shrink film, and each pack had a custom pack sticker. Several packs were then placed into one carton, with box stickers fixed on both ends.
After receiving the goods, the customer was very satisfied with the product quality, packing, and delivery condition.
