Water Glass vs. Silica Sol Investment Casting

Water glass and silica sol are both investment casting processes, but they differ in surface finish, dimensional accuracy, cost and suitable applications. We recommend the process according to the material, part size, tolerance, surface requirements and production quantity.

Water Glass Investment Casting

Water glass investment casting parts for medium and large industrial components

Commonly used for machinery parts, brackets, valve components and general industrial castings.

Silica Sol Investment Casting

Silica sol investment casting parts with improved dimensional accuracy and surface finish

Commonly used for pump and valve parts, food equipment, marine hardware and visible stainless steel components.

Which Process Should You Choose?

Water glass casting is generally selected when cost and larger part size are the main considerations. Silica sol casting is preferred when tighter tolerances, smoother surfaces and complex geometries are required. We can evaluate your drawing and recommend the appropriate process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Investment Casting

What is the difference between water glass and silica sol casting?

Water glass casting is generally more cost-effective and suitable for medium or larger industrial components. Silica sol casting offers tighter dimensional tolerances, smoother surfaces and better capability for small or complex stainless steel parts. We recommend the process according to the material, part size, tolerance and production quantity.

We commonly manufacture investment castings in stainless steel, carbon steel and alloy steel. Customer-specified ASTM, EN and GB material grades can also be evaluated according to the drawing and application requirements.

Yes. We can evaluate an existing sample, worn component, drawing or 3D file. For reverse-engineered parts, key dimensions, material requirements and application conditions should be confirmed before tooling and sample production.

Not all investment castings require machining. Parts may be supplied as raw castings when casting tolerances are sufficient. CNC machining, drilling, tapping and grinding can be added where tighter dimensions, threads or assembly surfaces are required.

The minimum order quantity depends on the part size, material, tooling cost and production process. We can support prototypes and small batches, while larger quantities normally offer a more economical unit cost.

Yes. Material certificates, dimensional inspection reports and other testing documents can be arranged according to the order requirements. Please specify any third-party inspection or special documentation requirements before quotation.

Lead time depends on the tooling complexity, part size and material. Tooling and initial samples generally require several weeks after the drawing and technical details are confirmed. A specific schedule will be provided with the quotation.
