What Is a Rear Axle Housing?

Rear axle housing is an important structural component in the automotive drivetrain system.
These components are often produced through metal casting processes, which allow complex shapes and high structural strength.

A rear axle housing is a key structural component in a vehicle’s drivetrain system. It encloses and supports important components such as the differential, axle shafts, bearings, and gears. The housing also helps transmit torque from the engine to the rear wheels while supporting the vehicle load.

Because of the heavy loads and dynamic stresses involved, rear axle housings are typically manufactured from high-strength cast iron or alloy steel.

Structure of a Rear Axle Housing

A typical rear axle housing consists of several main parts:

• axle tubes
• differential housing
• bearing supports
• mounting brackets
• suspension connection points

These components must maintain precise alignment to ensure smooth power transmission and long service life.

Rear Axle Housing Manufacturing Process

Rear axle housings are usually produced using casting or welded fabrication processes.

The typical manufacturing steps include:

Design and engineering analysis
Pattern or mold manufacturing
Metal casting or fabrication
Heat treatment for strength
CNC machining of critical surfaces
Surface finishing and inspection

Casting processes are often preferred because they allow complex shapes and high structural strength.

Rear Axle Housing Produced by Vacuum Casting

In this project, we manufactured rear axle housing components for an Oceanian customer in the automotive aftermarket.

Vacuum casting technology helps reduce gas defects and metal oxidation during the casting process, resulting in better surface quality and more stable mechanical properties.

This process is suitable for producing high-strength alloy steel castings with strict quality requirements.

Advantages of Casting Rear Axle Housing

Rear axle housings are often produced by casting because the process allows complex shapes and strong structural performance.

Advantages include:

• High structural strength
• Ability to produce complex geometry
• Suitable for heavy automotive components

Applications of Rear Axle Housing

Rear axle housings are widely used in various vehicles and industrial equipment.

Typical applications include:

Passenger vehicles
Commercial trucks
Construction machinery
Agricultural equipment
Off-road vehicles

Because these components carry heavy loads, durability and dimensional accuracy are essential.

Rear Axle Housing Project

We manufacture rear axle housing for our Oceanian client for the auto revision after-sales market.

We have a series of it, like rear axle housing, rear axle cover, rear axle hat and other parts related.

***The rear axle refers to the rear axle component of the vehicle’s power transmission. It consists of two half-bridges that can implement half-bridge differential motion. At the same time, it is also the device used to support the wheels and connect the rear wheels. If it is a vehicle driven by a front axle, the rear axle is merely a follow-up bridge, and it only serves as a bearing. If the front axle is not a driving axle, then the rear axle is the driving axle. At this time, in addition to the bearing function, it also plays a role in driving and deceleration. If it is a four-wheel drive, it is generally equipped with a score in front of the rear axle. Actuator. The rear axle is divided into an overall bridge and a half bridge. The integral bridge is equipped with a non-independent suspension, such as a leaf spring suspension and a half-bridge with an independent suspension, such as a MacPherson suspension.

Rear axle housing is made by our vacuum casting process.

Vacuum casting is the casting process in which metals are melted, poured and crystallised in a vacuum space. Vacuum casting minimises the amount of gas in the metal and prevents metal oxidation, resulting in a fine surface with good surface finish and fewer casting defects compared with other processes.

This method can produce special alloy steel material castings and highly oxidizable titanium alloy castings.

Vacuum casting has a high cost for production and is generally used for the high pressure and easy volatilisation loss and high-quality castings.

The casting should not contain volatiles.
