Project Overview

This project involved the production of EPDM rubber seals for railway expansion joints for a customer in Thailand.

The seals were manufactured through EPDM rubber extrusion according to the customer’s profile design and dimensional requirements.

Function of Railway Expansion Joint Seals

Railway expansion joints are used to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of rail tracks and supporting structures.

Rubber seals installed in these joints help:

  • prevent water penetration
  • block debris from entering the joint
  • maintain flexible movement between structures

Material – EPDM Rubber

EPDM rubber is widely used for outdoor sealing applications because it offers:

  • excellent weather resistance
  • good UV and ozone resistance
  • long service life in outdoor environments

These properties make EPDM suitable for infrastructure projects such as railways, bridges, and road expansion joints.

Product Development Process

The customer supplied an existing rubber seal sample together with the matching aluminium railway component. This allowed us to evaluate the profile cross-section, installation fit, contact areas, dimensions, and sealing position before developing the extrusion die.

Based on the sample and application requirements, we reviewed the EPDM compound, hardness range, dimensional tolerances, extrusion feasibility, and suitable production length.

After die development, the sample profile was extruded and fitted with the aluminium component for dimensional and assembly confirmation. Batch production started after the customer approved the sample shape, fit, material performance, and overall appearance.

Length and Packing Requirements

EPDM profiles can be continuously extruded, but the final production length must consider profile weight, handling, packing, transportation, and installation requirements.

For this project, the cut length was discussed and confirmed with the customer before batch production. Suitable lengths help reduce profile deformation during packing and make transportation and on-site installation more convenient.

Project Result

The completed EPDM extrusion seals matched the customer’s aluminium railway components and met the confirmed cross-sectional dimensions, flexibility, installation fit, and sealing requirements.

Before packing, the profiles were checked for section shape, dimensional consistency, surface condition, cut length, and assembly fit. After sample approval, the project proceeded to batch production for the railway expansion joint system.
