This project involved the production of a custom CR / Neoprene stuffing box gasket for an industrial valve maintenance project in Panama. At the beginning of the inquiry, the gasket was quoted based on EPDM. However, after reviewing the required specification more carefully, we found that the material needed to comply with MIL-G-1149C Type I Class 1 requirements, which correspond to oil-resistant chloroprene rubber, also known as CR or Neoprene.
Project Background
The customer required a large flat ring gasket with bolt holes for a valve stem stuffing box application. Since this component is used as a sealing gasket, material selection was important. The part needed to meet not only the drawing dimensions, but also the required rubber performance standard.
After specification review, we corrected the material from EPDM to CR / Neoprene and updated the price before production. This helped avoid using an incorrect rubber compound and ensured the finished gasket matched the application requirement.
Material Review and Correction
At the beginning of the inquiry, the gasket was quoted based on EPDM rubber. However, after reviewing the required specification more carefully, we confirmed that the correct material should be CR / Neoprene rubber to meet the oil-resistant requirement.
The specified requirement was based on MIL-G-1149C Type I Class 1, which refers to oil-resistant chloroprene rubber. Compared with EPDM, CR / Neoprene is more suitable when oil resistance is required. For this reason, we changed the material selection before manufacturing and produced the gasket using Neoprene / chloroprene rubber.
The finished gasket was manufactured and tested according to the required material conditions, including aging-related properties such as elongation retention, hardness after aging, and tensile strength retention.
Manufacturing Process
The gasket was produced from flat CR / Neoprene rubber sheet according to the customer drawing. The main ring profile and bolt holes were cut to the required dimensions. After cutting, the gasket was inspected for inner diameter, outer diameter, pitch circle diameter, hole diameter, and thickness.
This type of flat rubber gasket is suitable for custom drawing-based production, especially when the customer requires special rubber material, non-standard diameter, customized bolt hole layout, or specific inspection documentation.
For molded rubber and plastic parts, YT Casting also supports compression moulding according to customer drawings or samples.
Dimensional Inspection
Before delivery, dimensional inspection was carried out according to the drawing. The checked dimensions included the inner diameter, outer diameter, pitch circle diameter, hole diameter, and sheet thickness. The inspected results met the drawing requirements.
- Inner diameter inspection
- Outer diameter inspection
- Pitch circle diameter inspection
- Bolt hole diameter inspection
- Rubber sheet thickness inspection
Packaging and Delivery
To protect the large thin gasket during transportation, the gasket was packed flat with soft protective material inside the wooden case. This helped reduce bending, surface damage, and deformation risk during handling and shipment.
Project Result
The final CR / Neoprene stuffing box gaskets were produced according to the corrected material requirement and inspected according to the drawing. By reviewing the standard before production, we helped the customer avoid a material mismatch and delivered a gasket suitable for the required valve maintenance application.
YT Casting supports custom rubber, metal, and plastic components based on drawings, samples, or technical standards. For custom gasket projects, we can assist with material review, dimensional inspection, and production documentation before shipment.
