Introduction
Needle bearings are widely used in industrial applications such as conveyor systems, automotive assemblies, and heavy-duty machinery.
However, when exposed to humid or corrosive environments, standard carbon steel bearings may suffer from rust and reduced service life.
In this article, we share a practical solution developed for a long-term customer to improve corrosion resistance without sacrificing load capacity.

The Challenge
The customer required:
- Improved corrosion resistance
- No reduction in load capacity
- Compatibility with existing design
Traditional solutions such as full stainless steel were considered, but:
- 304 / 316 stainless steel cannot achieve high hardness
- Load capacity would decrease significantly
Our Engineering Solution
We proposed a hybrid solution, combining coating and material upgrade:
1. Zinc-Nickel Plating for Outer Ring & Cage
- Process: Zinc-Nickel (Zn-Ni) plating
- Coating thickness: ≥ 5 μm
- Actual thickness: approx. 8.5–10.3 μm
- Corrosion resistance: up to 600 hours salt spray test
This coating provides:
- Strong corrosion resistance
- Sacrificial protection for the base material
- Minimal impact on dimensional tolerance
This solution is already applied in real industrial projects with proven performance.
2. 440C Stainless Steel for Needle Rollers
The needle rollers are the most critical load-bearing components.
We upgraded the material to:
- 440C stainless steel (heat-treated)
- Hardness: typically HRC 60+
This ensures:
- High wear resistance
- High load capacity
- Improved corrosion resistance compared to standard bearing steel
Why Not Plate the Rollers?
In many applications, plating the rollers is not recommended, because:
- Rollers require extremely high surface precision
- Coating may affect:
- Surface roughness
- Rolling performance
- Fatigue life
Therefore, material upgrade is a more reliable solution.

Quality Verification
For previous similar projects (e.g., 3/4″ needle bearing), we performed full inspection including:
- Outer ring hardness: HV800–820
- Needle hardness: HRC61–64
- Surface finish: within 0.08–0.1
- Dimensional inspection: all within tolerance
All results met drawing and technical requirements.

When to Use This Solution
This solution is ideal for:
- Humid environments
- Outdoor equipment
- Agricultural and grain handling systems
- Oil & Gas / Pipeline applications
In pipeline systems, components are often exposed to moisture, soil, and corrosive environments. Long-term reliability and corrosion protection are critical in these applications. The combination of zinc-nickel plating and 440C stainless steel rollers provides an effective balance between corrosion resistance and mechanical performance, making it suitable for pipeline-related mechanical assemblies and support components. - General industrial applications requiring corrosion resistance
Conclusion
By combining:
- Zinc-nickel plating for external components
- 440C stainless steel for rollers
We achieve a balanced solution that improves corrosion resistance while maintaining mechanical performance.
